Description: What is inquiry? What does it look like in the
elementary science classroom? What does
the learning environment look like that supports inquiry?
This Pre K-2 workshop is designed to help practicing elementary teachers answer these questions. Working collaboratively, participants will develop their understanding of inquiry through investigations, explorations, journal readings, and discussion. We will be looking at the children’s literature that supports the scientific investigations and connecting our explorations to the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Framework.
Session 1: What does it mean to be a scientist? We will be discussing what it means to “think, talk, and act” like a
scientist. We will connect our discussions and explorations to the Physical Science strand of the Massachusetts
Science and Technology/Engineering Framework with a focus on the properties of an object and the ways objects
move.
Session 2: What are the “big ideas” of the Life Science and Earth and Space Science strands of the Massachusetts
Science and Technology/Engineering framework? Among the big ideas we will focus on will be how animals interact
with their environment. We will investigate some of these concepts in the outdoor classroom.
Session 3: What is meant by Technology /Engineering in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and how do
we implement this standard in our classrooms? We will also discuss the methods and tools used for assessing inquiry.

Description: SMART
Boards and computer projection systems are changing how we teach. This technology in conjunction with the
internet and dynamic software is a wonderful tool to help all students
understand the topics being presented. This 10-hour course is for the teacher
who is using SMART Board on a regular basis, has had some training and would
like more time to practice and share ideas and lessons. Our goal is to gain a higher level of both
confidence and proficiency. Over two
days you will be building lessons that will be used in your classroom. Bring a textbook to create a new lesson or
bring existing lessons that you would like to improve. The lessons we create will be shared with
other participants with the hope of creating a learning environment that will
continue after the class ends. Bring a
flash drive to collect and share files for each session.
Day 1:
ü Review of basics: SMART Notebook 10.0
This session will focus on using the gallery and the new features of SMART Notebook 10.0. Participants will learn how to enhance lessons, presentations and create interactive classroom activities. If you are already using 10.0, bring a sample lesson with some features that you have discovered. We will spend some time searching for existing lessons and tutorials online.
ü Video and SMART board
Participants will spend time using the SMART recorder and discussing how to make this a valuable tool in your class. We will also be inserting videos into our lessons. If you have some video clips that would be applicable, please bring them with you.
Day 2:
ü Linking: Software, Internet, Games
This session will show how to integrate other software into your presentations. We will spend some time searching for internet sites that would enhance our lessons. Bring links to the sites that you already use. The skill of linking is vital in making review games using SMART Notebook.
ü Loose Ends and Final Product
In this session participants will share what they have learned. Participants will also get to spend some time using Senteo, SMART’s interactive response system. The remaining time will be spent adapting the lessons you have just received to your upcoming classes.

PDPs: 5 PDPs
Fee: $35 for Member Districts $105 for non-Member Districts
Description: The 3-d Quadrat Program is designed to facilitate an understanding of earth system science. The Earth system is very dynamic and involves multiple variables that are all very dependent on each other. These variables included aspects of all five spheres: the atmosphere, the biosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere, and the cryosphere. Come to this workshop to learn how to create and use 3-d quadrats in your classroom from inexpensive, easily-obtainable materials. Help your students create a workable-sized space that encourages and allows collecting observations and data from multiple interactive parts of the Earth system. Furthermore, you will see how to incorporate other disciplines such as mathematics, literature, art, and social studies into your 3-d quadrat project. 3-d quadrats have been used to study the Earth system in Antarctica, the Amazon, the Bahamas, Glacier National Park, and schools in many areas of the US. Come to this workshop where you will absolutely learn to “think inside the box!”

Description: Using Smart Board software, called Smart Notebook, primary grade teachers will explore the possibilities and tools available through this software to enhance their lessons in mathematics, ELA and other content areas. Teachers will explore ways to enhance their teaching and knowledge in the use of interactive whiteboards in the classroom. A basic understanding of how to use Smart Notebook 9.7 is recommended but not required to take this class. It is recommended that you download the 9.7 software for free at smarttech.com so that you can save anything that you work on. Also, if you would like to share any materials please bring a flash drive for easy saving of lessons that your instructor or colleagues have created using the Smart Board. 10.0 users may still join this class to learn how to utilize 10.0; however, the instructor will be using 9.7 for instruction.
Day 1
You will review/learn all the basic functions that a smart board has to create engaging lessons, experiences and learning opportunities for the primary classroom. You will learn how to search for existing free smart notebook lessons through smarttech.com that meet the needs of your students. You will also learn how to take the best and most relevant parts of existing lessons and manipulate this existing material to better suit your learning community.
You will explore a large collection of existing math lessons including virtual manipulative and interactive materials for use in large and small group math instruction. You will learn to create similar lesson pages for lessons you are targeting in your classroom. We will also share and review a set of internet based interactive sites for the reinforcement of math skills taught in the primary grades.
Day 2
Day two will focus on ELA and the Smartboard as a group instructional tool. You will explore ways to enhance your chart paper based lessons on the dynamic and interactive Smart Board in order to draw your students into the exciting world of reading and writing. Areas covered will include brainstorming activities for writing assignments, word sorts, word families, interactive reading sites, handwriting instruction and more.
The session will also focus on sharing a solid collection of internet sites with interactive lessons which enhance instruction through the Smartboard in the classroom. From math puzzles and explorations to audio books and a writing site we will share resource known to us and explore ways to search for the best sites to support other lessons in our classrooms.
