Description: Using the Smart Board software, called Smart Notebook, primary grade teachers will explore the possibilities and tools available through this software to enhance their lessons in mathematics, ELA and other content areas. Teachers will explore ways to enhance their teaching and knowledge in the use of interactive whiteboards in the classroom. A basic understanding of how to use Smart Notebook 9.7 is recommended but not required to take this class. It is recommended that you download the 9.7 software for free at smarttech.com so that you can save anything that you work on. Also, if you would like to share any material please bring a flash drive for easy saving of lessons that your instructor or colleagues have created using the Smart Board. 10.0 users may still join this class to learn how to utilize 10.0; however, the instructor will be using 9.7 for instruction.
Session 1: You will review/learn all the basic functions that a smart board has to create engaging lessons, experiences and learning opportunities for the primary classroom. You will learn how to search for existing free smart notebook lessons through smarttech.com that meet the needs of your students. You will also learn how to take the best and most relevant parts of existing lessons and manipulate this existing material to better suit your learning community.
Session 2: On day two you will explore a large collection of existing Math lessons including virtual manipulative and interactive materials for use in large and small group math instruction. You will learn to create similar lesson pages for lessons you are targeting in your classroom. We will also share and review a set of internet based interactive sites for the reinforcement of math skills taught in the primary grades.
Session 3: Day three will focus on ELA and the smartboard as a group instructional tool. You will explore ways to enhance your chart paper based lessons on the dynamic and interactive Smart Board in order to draw your students into the exciting world of reading and writing. Areas covered will include brainstorming activities for writing assignments, word sorts, word families, interactive reading sites, handwriting instruction and more.
Session 4: Session four will focus on sharing a solid collection of internet sites with interactive lessons which enhance instruction through the smartboard in the classroom. From math puzzles and explorations to audio books and a writing site we will share resource known to us and explore ways to search for the best sites to support other lessons in our classrooms.
