Description:  Paideia Seminar stimulates higher order thinking through discussion of inherent ideas in the fields of literature, art, music, science, history, philosophy and mathematics. The Paideia Seminar model requires students to reference the text or work they are discussing to provide evidence and support for their thinking. Participants develop skills in critical and creative thinking. Using Paideia Seminar with middle and high school students of all abilities works well. Seminar discussion helps to prepare students for life in college and the work place by requiring students to listen, discuss, and accept differing ideas from peers. Improving discussion skills also strengthens students’ social skills helping them to find their place in a group, to share ideas with peers about academic learning, and to build self-esteem and confidence. After a seminar, students have many new ideas and by writing about the seminar’s conclusions, students bring closure to their seminar experience. Students develop more respect for other people’s values, experience, and opinions through lively interaction in discussion. As we live in a much more verbal and informational world, teachers can use the seminar to help their students access their prior knowledge, build background knowledge, and understand and connect great works to their own lives in relevant and meaningful ways.
