Description: This workshop will focus on the use of CPO equipment to teach basic concepts in distance, velocity, and acceleration. Specifically, carts, timers, and ramps, and marble launchers will be used in conjunction with Microsoft Excel to record, analyze, and graph data. Determination of instantaneous and average velocity will be discussed. A “roller coaster” ramp will also be used to calculate kinetic and potential energy. Participants will receive detailed handouts for all activities to be used in the classroom. This workshop is for science teachers of grades 6-12 and is associated with Physics Learning Standards 1 and 2 (Motion and Forces and Conservation of Energy and Momentum) as well as Standards 11 and 12 for grades 6-8 (Motion of Objects) in the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Framework. Activities are equally useful in physical science or physics classes.
