Third Annual Program on
Strategies in Strengthening the Middle
School
Math Curriculum for At-Risk Students
Sponsored by
The Salem State Collaborative
The Salem State Collaborative
is again offering its successful series of four full-day workshops targeted for
classroom teachers, special education teachers and aides who work with at-risk
middle school students. The focus of
each workshop will be to review a specific math strand from grade 5 through
grade 8, analyze MCAS test items that assess that strand, discuss instructional
strategies and discuss support material that is appropriate to deal with the
strand.
This program is divided into
two components based on teacher experience and familiarization with the MCAS
exam and the mathematics frameworks. Guest speakers will be invited to present
on various sub-topics involved in preparing students for high stakes
assessments. Additionally, materials developed by the collaborative will be
made available to participants.
MCAS BASICS: This workshop series is for new middle
school teachers and special education teachers. More time will be spent on
analyzing the exam and problem solving approaches in addressing each of the
content strands. Time will be spent on instruction in the use of TI technology
for grade 7 and 8 teachers.
ADVANCED MCAS: This workshop series is for experienced
middle school mathematics teachers. The presenter will act more as a moderator
in addressing each of the content strands. Participants will be asked to share
their experiences and strategies used within their districts. Participants will
review strategies in addressing focused review of strands, in multiple
approaches in classroom presentations and in developing activities that address
multiple strands in reviewing for the 2008 MCAS exam.
