Inquiry Science Workshop Series for Grades Pre K-2 Scientists

Audience: Grade Pre K- 2 Classroom Teachers

PDP’s: 10 Hours

Dates: April 5, 12, 26, May 3

Time:  3:30 – 6 PM

 

Description:  Children are always asking questions about the world around them. In this PreK-2 workshop we will be discussing how we can support our students’ inquiry and build their understanding of the science concepts presented in the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Frameworks. Working collaboratively we will carry out investigations, discuss the learning environment that fosters inquiry and examine the literature that supports student understanding of the concepts presented.

 

Date (Thursdays)      

Session 1         What does it mean to be a scientist? We will be discussing what it means               5 April 2007       

to be a scientist  and will use our senses to begin to develop our observational     

skills. We will connect our discussion and explorations to the Physical

Science strand. We will develop our own definition of a scientist and read

What is a Scientist by Barbara Lehn.

 

Session 2         What is a plant? How is it different from an animal? We will be                             12 April 2007

discussing and investigating the characteristics of living things with a focus

on trees.  Our explorations will be connected to the Life Science strand.

We will look at A Tree for All Seasons by Robin Bernard and the

 Salamander Room by Anne Mazer.

 

Session 3         What is a structure? We will be designing and discussing buildings.                       26 April 2007          

Our explorations will be connected to the Technology/Engineering

strand. We will look at how math and science skills are connected. We

 read Gail Gibbons’ work How a House Is Built.

 

Session 4        What is a rock?  We will be exploring the natural materials that are found                           3 May 2007

                       around us. Our explorations will be connected to the Earth and Space Science

                       strand and we will be reading the work If You Find a Rock by Peggy Christian.

 

Fee:     $35 for Member Districts              $145 for non-Member Districts
