Description: Comprehension can be a challenge to both teachers and students because the action itself cannot be observed.  This workshop will move from determining successful comprehension by having students answer “test” questions to observation of active deep thinking.  We will investigate the power of repeated read aloud, look at concrete teacher directed mini-lessons on comprehension strategies, examine ideas for facilitating independent use of comprehension strategies by students, and explore the ideas of Stephanie Harvey, Debbie Miller, and Tanny McGregor as mentors to this process.  We will investigate these ideas as inspiration and make comprehension visible for our students.
